If it feels like the nonprofit sector is riding a roller coaster right now, you’re not alone. Budget cuts, program restructuring, and a rapidly shifting policy landscape have left many nonprofit leaders scrambling to adjust, plan, and protect the integrity of their mission. These are what some might call “uncertain times,” and they bring with them a mix of stress, urgency, and a variety of challenges.

We understand the pressure you’re under, and we’re here to help you find calm in the chaos.

Our team has been in your shoes. We’ve worked in government, led nonprofit programs, and weathered more than a few policy and funding shifts. Through it all, we’ve found that clarity comes from one powerful source: data. In a noisy world filled with competing priorities, the ability to clearly articulate your organization’s impact is more important than ever.

Why Your Data Story Matters Now

A well-crafted data story is not just a nice-to-have—it’s a critical tool for engaging stakeholders, attracting funding, and building public support. Whether you’re preparing for a legislative meeting, writing a grant, or communicating with your board, a compelling data narrative helps you answer key questions:

  • Why does your organization exist?
  • What impact are you having?
  • What do you need to keep making a difference?

We’ve recently had clients reaching out to us for help in telling their story more effectively, particularly as they seek to build or reinforce their case for support. Through this work, we’ve used our tried and true approach that can help any organization strengthen its data story:

Elements of a Strong Data Story

  1. Define Your Audience
Begin with clarity on who you’re speaking to. A message that resonates with legislators may differ significantly from one designed for funders or community members. One client of ours recently prepared to meet with policymakers and needed to adjust their message to connect with that particular audience’s goals and interests.
  2. Simplify the Data
Avoid jargon and over-complicated metrics. Think about what data will matter most to your audience. For the policymakers above, we emphasized a few key stats that demonstrated program effectiveness without overwhelming them with details.
  3. Provide Context
Your data means more when it’s connected to a broader narrative. For an early childhood education client, we compared their community’s Kindergarten readiness scores to others without similar programming, showcasing the unique value of their work.
  4. Make It Visual
Data is more powerful when it’s easy to digest. We helped that same client create a one-page overview that combined compelling visuals with simple, persuasive messaging and a clear call to action. The result was an advocacy tool that delivered results.

Our Commitment to You

No matter what changes may be coming, the need to make a strong case for your organization’s work remains constant. That’s why we’re passionate about equipping nonprofits with the tools and confidence to make data-informed decisions that drive impact.

I know this work firsthand. Before founding TCG, I served as Policy Director for a network of human service organizations in Los Angeles and held roles in the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, including in the Budget Office, Head Start Office, and Children’s Bureau. I’ve seen the difference a well-timed, well-told data story can make. Now, I lead a team of experienced, mission-driven consultants who are ready to help you do the same.
