New State Commission Blog PictureLast month, the new State Commission on Improving the Status of Children convened for the first time. The Commission was established under Senate Enrolled Act 125, which became effective July 1, 2013, to promote greater coordination among agencies to ensure that effective services are available and accessible when the child needs them.

Thirty-one state boards and agencies currently oversee issues involving children in Indiana. The Commission includes representatives from all three branches of state government, including the Department of Child Services, the Superintendent of Public Instruction, the state Health Director, the Attorney General, the Indiana Supreme Court and state lawmakers.

Indiana Supreme Court Justice Loretta H. Rush serves as the first Chair of the Commission. In cooperation with other entities, members of the Commission will study issues concerning vulnerable youth, review and make recommendations concerning pending legislation, and promote information sharing and best practices.   Additional meetings are tentatively scheduled for October 16 from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. in Conference Rooms 1 & 2 and December 11 from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. in Conference Rooms 1 & 2 at the Indiana Government Center South. The meetings are open to the public.
