2021 Giving Trends: What Does the Data Mean for Your Organization?

The data is out! We now have access to giving trends from 2021 and are looking at the implications these numbers will have on your organization’s strategies moving forward.  Giving USA 2022: The Annual Report on Philanthropy for the Year 2021 shows national giving last year remained strong following a record 2020, with individuals, bequests, foundations, and corporations giving an estimated $484.85 billion to nonprofits in 2021. This report leads to some critical questions nonprofits should be asking themselves, especially around funding diversification. Did you know a majority (90%) of non-profit organizations report that they have one...

What is a Data-Informed Organization?

Over the last decade, data has become a big deal and is showing up more in our everyday lives and work environment. Over the past 18 months, with COVID-19, we have all been using data to track incident rates, exposure rates, deaths, and vaccination rates. Data has equipped our leaders and the public with information to make decisions to keep us safe.  In addition to the national pandemic, we have seen significant trends that have catapulted the possibility and capability of using data to inform and help solve big and everyday problems. Some of these trends include the development of new technology that has helped organizations collect,...

In our digital age, comprehensive data is available at our fingertips. Endless search options are accessible, but it can be overwhelming. Responding to COVID-19: How to Adjust Your Data Management Plan

The COVID-19 public health crisis changed the way most of us do our work. Many of our clients, especially those who  are school-based or operate afterschool programs, faced the challenge of ending their school-year programming unexpectedly. Programs are trying to find new ways to engage youth virtually and are planning for new safety restrictions for summer programming.   This crisis is also impacting many programs’ ability to report on their results and outcomes. If you have incomplete data for this program year, you may wonder how to best report your impact. Here are four steps to adjust your data management plan in light...

3 Tips For Managing Program Data

Do you have a system for effectively and efficiently storing and monitoring program data? At Transform Consulting Group, we work with many clients who are required to report on program outcomes and impact, but they often lack systematic approaches to managing their data. We know data can drive program impact (check out this blog), but in order to use the data, you first have to collect and accurately report information.  One type of organization required to report on program outcomes and impact is Head Start. Head Start programs, at all levels (federal, state, local, and internal), are required to collect program data and report on it...

Why Break Down Data?

When you’re using data to make decisions, are you also taking time to break down data to learn more? Perhaps you are struggling to understand the needs of different parts of the population you serve. Maybe you’re noticing different outcomes in different groups but don’t know why. When you break down data, you can see what’s hidden within your overall results.  One important reason to break down data is to help your clients who are experiencing multiple adverse events. Our team at Transform Consulting Group worked with Coalition for Homelessness Intervention and Prevention (CHIP) to understand the challenges of people experiencing both...

Are You Data Literate?

Recently the TCG team participated in a data visualization challenge at the Indy Big Data Conference, and this experience has led me to writing a blog on data literacy.  What is data literacy? Merriam Webster defines being literate as “having knowledge or competence”, and being competent with data is a foundational skill we all need in this age of big data. Now, you don’t have to love math or know how to write code to be data literate. What you need to be comfortable doing is asking what, how, why, and so what of data. What data is being collected? (e.g., age, county, number of individuals with a college degree) How is the data being...

Press Pause: Redesigning an Existing Program

In January, we kicked off our Exercise Your Impact campaign. Throughout 2019 we’re sharing tools and resources that highlight critical phases of organizational planning. During Quarter 2, we are focusing on program development. An important aspect of program development is knowing when to redesign an existing program. Too often, organizations operate on "auto-pilot" and keep running their programs in the same way because that’s how they’ve always done it. Programs can start to feel stagnant or stuck in a rut, but the effort involved in making a big programmatic change can keep programs in this place. Staying on auto-pilot can cause staff to...

2018 Indy Big Data Conference Visualization Challenge Summary

Our TCG team recently presented at the Fifth Annual Indy Big Data Conference for the Visualization Challenge (read about some of our lessons learned here). This year’s challenge focused on improving Indiana’s talent pipeline and workforce.  Participating teams were provided several datasets to analyze and interpret, and then present to a panel of judges. Following the first round of presentations, the judges then awarded five teams the opportunity to present to 500+ conference attendees. Our TCG was one of those top five teams selected! How to use 990 tax forms for grant writing?

Writing grants can be a long, arduous process.  In this past blog, we talked about five steps for grant writing.  Once you have identified possible funders who share alignment with your organization’s mission and goals, you want to gather more information to make a compelling grant request. Some helpful things to know about a possible funder before submitting a grant application are the following: Who have they funded in the past? How much have been their grants? What have been the projects / services funded? Who is on their Board of Directors? This research is not an absolute that would change your grant proposal but would help inform the...
